Spam is unsolicited commercial e-mail that people did not ask to receive. The goal of most spam is to make money. Spammers keep on spamming because risks are perceived to be small relative to both the potential gains and the other options for getting rich quick. Spam has grown from a mere annoyance to a huge burden for enterprise. The increasingly nasty payloads delivered with spam, things like Trojans, viruses, adware, spyware and phishing attacks constitutes a threat to both network infrastructure and productivity. Here are some negative impact of spamming:

  • Employees Loses productivity. Instead of check e-mail for business purposes, employees are spending time removing spam out of their e-mail inbox.
  • Wastes resources because spam consumes lots of bandwidth, processing cycles, and storage space.
  • Enterprise have to spend money on spam filtering, block list administration, spam-related customer complaints, and filter/block-related complaints. The cost of keeping spam out of your inbox and your enterprise is one thing. The cost of preventing spam from impacting system availability and business operations is another.

What can enterprise do to protect and prevent the infrastructure from spam? Filtering out spam, based on content, can be done at several levels: End User Filters, ISP/Corporate Network Filtering, External Filtering Services.

With End User Filters, many e-mail users perform manual negative filtering for spam, and identifying spam by a process of elimination. Anti-Spam software, from TrendMicro Internet Security Pro, allows you to set rules about which email you want to receive in your inbox, reject or delete, put in a certain folder or quarantine for you to look through at your own discretion. You should be able to set up blacklists and whitelists and of utmost relevance-it should work with the email service that you use. Flexible Anti-Spam software allows many different customization choices – you have the ability to block unwanted spam and decide what level of filtering they want, and be in control of how the emails are organized. High filter options automatically block and delete all emails that are not on an approved list. Lower filter options sort all emails and save them in folders to let the user decide which ones to open or delete. Good feature of this Anti-Spam software is their spoof-proof fraud protection which allows you to automatically verify the authenticity of the message from people and companies using an industry standard digital signature.

ISPs are initially hesitant to conduct content-based spam filtering, fearing that it might be construed as reading other people’s e-mail and lead to claims of privacy invasion. So, they just filter on the “From” address and “Subject” field. One place where content-based spam filters are being deployed with little or no concern for legal challenges is the corporate network. By deploying messaging security solutions with all security software and hardware, enterprise can have greater control over their messaging security.
