Defense and Protection to Computer System.
Computer viruses, spyware and malware have been a persistent, annoying, and costly threat to the enterprise and individuals. There are many motives behind virus creators – from for financial gain, reputation gain to just as a prank. These viruses and malwares can steal valuable information or the resources of an infected computer, steal passwords, send spam from a compromised machine, install software designed to display ads (with programs known as adware), create zombie nets, damage data and cause system downtime. Viruses get smarter nowadays. They can evade traditional antivirus defenses and distribution by exploiting vulnerabilities in common software. These viruses are often slightly modified and compressed with “packers,” which frequently use sophisticated obfuscation or anti—reverse-engineering techniques. Once they are in a system, they often employ stealthing techniques such as kernel-mode rootkits to hide themselves from the operating system and from many antivirus (AV) products. Viruses and malware have become complex, are adept at disguising themselves, and are not as easy to find and eradicate.
Virus growth is accelerating at exponential rates. New viruses are tracked and reported daily, and their ability to spread wide and fast is astonishing. To counter this problem, AV software have become sophisticated logic machines. In order to operate efficiently, AV scanners have had to resort to numerous tricks to prevent virus infections, find infections, disinfect programs, and still operate at a reasonably high speed, without bringing the entire system to a halt. They can use some or all of these four basic methods of operation:
- Specific detection. Looking for infections by known viruses
- Generic detection. Looking for infections by variants of known viruses
- Heuristics. Scanning for previously unknown viruses by noting suspicious behavior or file structures
- Intrusion prevention. Monitoring known-suspicious system changes and behaviors to prevent unknown infections
